What Do We Know About The Lafayette Donkey?

The donkey was found on Wilturner Road in Lafayette Parish, according to a post on Facebook by the Lafayette Animal Shelter and Care Clinic. The shelter posted about the donkey on Monday morning, around 8:20 a.m.

The male donkey was just seen wandering the streets and was happy to get into a trailer when animal officials came to pick him up.

Shelley Delahousaye of Lafayette Animal Control and Care Center says the donkey is well-groomed and well-behaved, and loves getting pets.

Multiple Residents Offer to Adopt the Donkey Found Near Duson

The minute the picture of the beautiful donkey was posted to social media, several people stepped up to say that if the rightful owners are not found, they are willing to adopt our friend. It's excellent news, and it's no surprise, as our community consistently steps up to care for family, friends, and animals.

The gray donkey has a beautifully cropped mane and almost seems to be smiling (just a little) in the photo.

Devin Dole with the Bray Club points out on social media that having any equine animal, whether it's a working farm animal or a beloved pet, is not inexpensive. She points out that it can cost at least a few hundred dollars a month to feed a donkey.

How Much Would It Cost to Care for a Donkey Found on a Lafayette Parish Road?

According to Backyard Herds, the cost of owning a donkey can be more cost-effective than other farm animals.

Donkeys are relatively easy to keep and usually do not cause many problems on the farm. They do not tear down fences or need lush, grass-filled pastures. Donkeys like to eat dry vegetation and can make do with hay. They need grain only in limited amounts, if at all, and eat much less than horses or cows.
We hope our donkey can be reunited with its owner and family. If not, the good news is that several people have stepped up to help this lovely creature.
We will keep you posted.
