Texas One Step Closer To All Year Daylight Saving Time, Banning Time Changes
Are Texans getting closer to never having to change their clocks again? Yes, but that doesn't mean everyone will be happy, and there are still other steps that must happen.
A bill authored by Representative Will Metcalf would have Texas observe Daylight Saving Time year-round instead of switching back to standard time. House Bill 1393 says that, “this state … shall observe daylight saving time year-round.”
Year-Round Daylight Saving Time Proposed For Texas
The Texas House voted and passed HB 1393 last week, but that doesn't mean it is a done deal. The Senate still hasn't voted on this bill and the Governor hasn't signed off on the idea. And even if he does, the federal government would have to approve of the idea. Which might be easier with President Trump in office who has supported staying on Daylight Saving Time.
The Department of Transportation states can opt out of Daylight Saving Time but not stay on it.
“States may choose to exempt themselves from observing Daylight Saving Time by State law. States do not have the authority to choose to be on permanent Daylight Saving Time.”
Texas Could Stay on Standard Time All Year
According to The Texan News, State Senator Judith Zaffirini has filed a bill, SB 64, that would keep Texas on standard time all year long.
Texans May Still Continue Changing Times Twice a Year
This isn't the first time that the Texas Legislature has brought up the idea of doing away with the time change, and we are still changing times twice a year. We could get closer this year, but don't be surprised if you are still changing times in 2026.
