Texas Law Would Require The Ten Commandments Be Displayed In School Classrooms
In June of 2024, the State of Louisiana passed a law requiring a copy of the Ten Commandments be posted inside school classrooms. Texas could join Louisiana if some lawmakers have their way.
Another debate over the Ten Commandments will take place during the Texas Legislative Session this year. Like last year, this debate has to do with requiring a all school classrooms in Texas to display the Ten Commandments.
In 2023, the Texas Senate passed a bill that would have required the Ten Commandments be posted in Texas classrooms, but the bill failed to pass in the Texas House. When Louisiana passed its law, Texas Lt. Governor Dan Patrick had said Texas should have been the first state to pass the law. The Louisiana law is currently tied up in the courts.
Will The Texas Legislature Pass A Law Requiring the Ten Commandments in Classrooms?
According to a report from Fox4, State Representative Mike Olcott has filed HB 1009 which would require schools to display the Ten Commandments in every classroom.
In the Texas Senate, NPR reports that Texas State Senator Phil King will lead the charge to bring the Ten Commandments to Texas classrooms. NPR also reports that Texas State Senator Brandon Creighton supports the measure as well.
While there is no guarantee of passage, chances of the bill passing in the Texas Senate look good since they passed a similar bill in 2023. All eyes will be on the Texas House to see if a bill passes there. Democrats have already signaled they will attempt to stop the legislation.
