Two Texas men are lucky to be alive after getting caught in a tornado while fishing.

I love to fish. For me, it’s more about relaxing than actually catching fish. I like to joke that I may not even put any bait on the hook.

So no, I’m not a hardcore fisherman in the least bit. But the old boys in the video below are the very definition of hardcore fishermen.

I’ve always heard that one of the best times to go fishing is right before a storm hits. But there’s no way I would tempt fate like that. I grew up in Tornado Alley, so I know just how unpredictable tornadoes are.

Speaking of growing up in Tornado Alley, I witnessed the tornado that struck Vernon, Texas on April 10, 1979. From where I was standing it looked like a cloud that was churning in the distance.

It was what is known as a wedge tornado, which doesn’t look like what you expect a tornado to look like. Wedge tornadoes look like a cloud that has dipped down and touched the ground.

So, I can see how the fishermen didn’t realize it was a tornado until it was too late. Thankfully, they lived to tell the story.
