You Might Be Able To Buy Liquor On Sunday In Lubbock Soon

If I had a dollar for every time I've wanted to buy a bottle of liquor on a Sunday, I'd be filthy rich and very drunk on Sundays. Unfortunately, Texas law still doesn't allow liquor sales on The Lord's Day, but it looks like that might be changing soon, and I think it's something we can all get behind.

So far, it's not perfect, but it's definitely a start.

Two bills were recently filed in the Texas House and Senate that just might expand booze sales to include Sundays. According to FOX4, Senate Bill 1288 and House Bill 2200 would change the definition of "liquor" in the Alcoholic Beverage Code so that it would no longer include "spirit coolers", which are simply canned mixed drinks, that have recently grown in popularity.

So basically, you still wouldn't be able to buy a bottle of Jack Daniels, BUT, you would at least be able to buy a canned mixed drink that contains rum, brandy, gin, tequila, and all of your other favorites, as long as they are less than 17% alcohol by volume.

It still seems kind of stupid to just flirt with the idea of selling liquor. There isn't much of a difference between selling a bottle of the hard stuff for you to take home and mix with a coke, and selling something that is pre-mixed. We might as well just sell it all, but I guess I will take what I can get.

I've never quite understood what real purpose is served by withholding the sale of liquor on Sundays, but I know it all goes back to the "blue laws" from 1961 when Texas decided to ban all kinds of Sunday purchases, including pots, pans, washing machines, and liquor. The rules were repealed in 1985, and while you can now buy household items, liquor simply didn't make the cut. Bummer for us all.
