A HUGE shoutout to all the men and women from the area in our armed services.

It is with immense pride that Lubbock and the surrounding areas contribute so much personnel to the armed services. Please know that each and every one of you, and your families have the total support of the people of the Hub City. We are well aware that some of you joined to "get out" of the area, but we're confident that you will be grateful to return home after you've seen the world.

With all of this in mind, we receive more updates on our service people from one branch of the armed services than all others combined. This leads me to the question, do more people from here join the branch, or does that branch just have a better publicity department?

So do you know who it is? If you guessed the U.S. Navy, then you'd be correct. We are always getting updates on the activities of folks from around our area who are in the Navy.

We received one such dispatch from the U.S. Navy this week that named checked a local (I underlined the most relevant parts for you).

By Mass Communications Specialist 1st Class Bryan Niegel, Navy Office of Community Outreach

MILLINGTON, Tenn. - A Lubbock, Texas, native serving in the United States Navy reflects on the contributions of women in military service during Women’s History Month, March 1 - 31.

“Women’s History Month means showing the appreciation of how women have come so far,” said Petty Officer 3rd Class Mckenna Smith. “It's a testament of being strong and independent, earning the right to have a voice and the right to stand for what you believe in.”

Women’s History Month is a celebration of women’s contributions to history, culture and society and has been observed annually in the month of March in the United States since 1987.

Thank you to Petty Officer 3rd Class Mckenna Smith, and thank you to the U.S. Navy for bringing her service to our attention.  We appreciate both of you more than we can ever really express in words.
