The Tradition

Texas Tech has a tradition of throwing tortillas at football games. It's a (mostly) harmless way to celebrate the start of a game. The origins of the tradition are all over the place. Supposedly it started with people throwing drink lids and when the stadium started serving drinks without lids people started throwing tortillas. There's also a story about a sports commentator saying "There isn't anything in Lubbock but Texas Tech and a tortilla factory". I have always heard that a concessionaire ran out of something, substituted tortillas and people began throwing them.

The Downside

The only real problem with people throwing tortillas is that it can lead to people throwing more dangerous things. Then again, you never know when a ref may flag these team and delay the game until all of the tortillas are picked up. Of course your mama may also get onto you for wasting food.

The Start

I remember when this tradition began, and though I don't really give a hoot about what happened in the stadium, there was a huge outcry that throwing tortillas was "racist". To me, that was the most ridiculous thing ever. Tortillas were thrown because they were cheap and available, it had not roots in racism at all, and I'll die on that hill.

The Roast

A site called "The Tailgate Tour" posted  "Day 25 Of Calling Out Every Dumb College Football Tradition" was Tech's penchant for throwing tortillas was included in the video. That video is now trending in Reels and can be found here. Suffice it to say, it just featured Tech kids throwing tortillas at the start of a game.
