Texas Tech Fan’s Bad Behavior Put On Blast In National Media
Perhaps emotions ran a bit high for Texas Tech fans at the game last weekend.
Is the Coverage Fair?
Here we go again—criticizing Texas Tech football is rarely popular, and I know most readers won’t get beyond the headline. But when poor fan behavior makes the front page of USA Today, it’s worth a closer look. It’s a bit embarrassing, then again, given that similar incidents happen at plenty of other games. Why single out Texas Tech?
The Blast
The article which initially appeared on the front page of USA Today not only cast Texas Tech fans in a negative light but also bolstered the image of our opponent, giving them a public relations boost. Instead of a win, this event left Coach Prime looking like a hero, facing and overcoming the situation. And before anyone points fingers over the negative press, it’s worth noting that the Texas Tech coach had to intervene during the 4th quarter.
The Passion
Getting caught up in the game is easy, and moments of frustration are common—for the team, the opposing team, or the officials. But bad behavior isn’t an excuse, especially when it risks a penalty that could cost us 15 yards. Criticizing fan conduct might not change much, but without improvement, the university may be forced to implement “stadium-oriented solutions,” like lidless cups for all beverages, even water.
Will It End?
I understand fans’ passion and frustration. But ultimately, incidents like these only lead to tighter security measures, stricter searches, and more rigorous clear-bag policies.
