Texas Pumpkins
I know we're just talking pumpkins here, but there is a fascinating fact about Texas pumpkins. First off, I have to backtrack and tell you that most of the information is from 2020 because they embargo the newer information for competitive reasons. What makes this interesting to me, and required a deep dive, is that even though Texas is only about 6th in pumpkin's grown, the state comes out a winner.
Pricier Pumpkins
The value of Texas pumpkins was actually #1 in the U.S. in 2020 because of the quality of the pumpkins produced. The Texas crop in 2020 was actually valued at $25.9 million. Most of the pumpkins produced in the top five states are actually grown for food purposes and have a much lower value. I guess Texas just grows pretty pumpkins that give farmers a higher return on their investment.
Pumpkin Country
So where in Texas is "Pumpkin Country"? Well any number of places can be good places to produce pumpkins, but Floyd County, Texas, about 50 miles northeast of Lubbock claims to be "The Pumpkin Capitol Of Texas". If you read this article in town, you can actually catch their pumpkin festival on October 11th.
Pumpkin Pals
So who produces more pumpkins? It almost seems odd to me, and I can't quite put my finger on why, but Illinois is #1 followed by Indiana, California, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. On the worldwide stage, the number on producer of pumpkins is, drumroll please.........China.
