You aren't imagining it, egg prices are through the roof.
Big Bucks!
Right now a dozen eggs runs about $8. This figure averages in the different sizes and qualities, but it's a good number to work with. As recently as 2021, that number was more like around $1.75. In 2022 egg prices shot up to a massive $4.25. So you can see that we're at almost double of the highest price we previously paid for eggs.
Sick Chickens
Anyone with a lick of sense will tell you that the price of eggs has almost nothing to do with the economy, or who the president is. Nope, the price of eggs has to do with the chickens. Simply put, more chickens=more eggs=lower cost. Right now we are in the grip of a bird flu that has cause the loss of a lot of chickens, so let's redo that more formula, less chickens=less eggs=higher prices.
It'll Be A Minute
We also have to be realistic, all those laying hens are not going to come back all at once. I would also say that some may take advantage of this mess and try to artificially keep the prices of eggs higher. In the long-term though, it does look like good ol' supply and demand rule the roost. A good example of this would be that WAY BACK in 1996 you could get eggs for $1.31 a dozen, and in 2016 they were $1.38.
Just Wait
There are some that use this as a political narrative, but it's the chickens. If we can keep them healthy, we can get back to some reasonably priced eggs.
