Execution season in Texas has already drawn to a close for 2024.

I guess folks don't have the stomach to execute inmates over the holiday season.

The next person scheduled to meet the needle is convicted minister murderer Steven Nelson in February 2025.

Texas currently ties in the number of executions for 2024 with Alabama at five; however, if Alabama executes Carey Dale Grayson for the heinous mutilation death of a female hitchhiker in November (and they probably will),  then Alabama will hold the record this year.

Texas had the most executions in 2023 by a wide margin and has performed the most executions overall since the Supreme Court reinstated the death penalty by a margin in the hundreds.

So it is unusual for Alabama to outpace us.

Texas had scheduled 8 men to die; however, three had their executions stayed for various reasons, including Robert Roberson's very controversial "Shaken Baby Syndrome" conviction.

Texas death penalty convictions are getting rarer- in 2023 and so far in 2024, only 3 people have received the death penalty each year, according to TACDP. So this could indicate "lighter" years to come.

In total, nearly 180 people sit on Death Row, however, some have been there for decades and could quite literally die of old age before they are ever executed.

There are only two people set to be executed in 2025 so far, but those numbers can and probably will go up as more people are slated to die in 2025.
