Is Tornado Season Over in Lubbock? Here’s What You Should Know
We’ve had some terrifying moments recently on the South Plains, including a stretch where we faced eight tornadoes at once. But now many are wondering: is the worst behind us?
What Exactly Is Tornado Season in Lubbock?
Just like there’s a “cold season,” there’s also a defined tornado season. This is the time of year when conditions—like atmospheric instability and wind shear—are most favorable for tornado formation.
In Lubbock, tornado season typically spans March through June, with the highest activity generally occurring between mid-April and mid-June. While tornadoes can technically happen any time of year, the odds drop sharply once this window passes.

The Unpredictability of West Texas Weather
Of course, living in Lubbock means you’re always just one forecast away from chaos. I vividly remember one week where it was so hot during football practice that people were passing out—then the very next day, we had snow on the ground.
That’s West Texas weather in a nutshell: chaotic, quick-changing, and rarely boring.
Tornadoes May Be Done, But the Wind Never Quits
While tornadoes make headlines, it’s often the high winds that do the most damage around here. I escaped tornado damage this season, but I did suffer property damage from intense winds several weeks earlier.
In fact, damaging straight-line winds are a far more frequent threat to our area than twisters.
So... Is It Over?
According to local meteorologists, the worst of the tornado threat is likely behind us. That said, in Lubbock, it's always a good idea to stay weather-aware. Our forecasts can turn on a dime.
For now, though, it looks like we can breathe a little easier: tornado season is officially over.
