A new Kickstarter campaign is putting Lubbock on the map in the outdoor gear world, thanks to a lightweight, packable kayak designed by a local entrepreneur.

The project, called Pontos, was created by Adam Mulsow, a Texas Tech graduate who developed the idea right here in Lubbock. What started as a garage project has grown into a full-fledged startup, now preparing for a crowdfunding launch.

A Kayak Designed for Simplicity and Portability

Unlike traditional kayaks, Pontos is built to be collapsible and easy to transport. The latest version weighs around seven pounds and packs down to the size of a small tent, making it far more convenient than standard models that can weigh several times more.

Pontos is a lightweight kayak that packs down to the size of a small tent, is easy to assemble, and performs great in the water.

The kayak uses a carbon fiber frame and durable waterproof fabric, allowing it to be assembled in just minutes. The goal is simple: make kayaking more accessible for people who do not have space for bulky equipment or the means to transport it.

Built in Lubbock, Backed by Innovation

According to KCBD, the Pontos concept was born during time spent near local lakes in Lubbock, where Mulsow saw a need for easier access to outdoor recreation.

Since then, the project has gained traction through Texas Tech’s Innovation Hub and startup competitions, earning funding and support to move toward production.

Now, the Kickstarter campaign aims to take Pontos to the next level by securing backers who want to see the product hit the market. Reward tiers will be announced when the campaign is live.

A Local Idea With Big Potential

With its focus on portability and ease of use, Pontos could open the door for more people to enjoy kayaking without the usual barriers. And with roots firmly planted in Lubbock, it is another example of how local ideas can grow into products with national appeal.

As the campaign launches, all eyes will be on whether this West Texas innovation can make waves far beyond the South Plains.
