Voting in Lubbock County is on, but for what?

Early Voting Is Happening Now In Lubbock

Early voting is underway. At stake are funds for Lubbock public schools. The amount is under 300 million, but we'll see if that makes a difference at all. Right now it seems like the struggle bus has pulled up to everyone's house, and I'm not sure how many people will want to get on board. Before I add any additional commentary, here's how the actual ballot reads:

THE ISSUANCE OF BONDS IN THE AMOUNT OF $290,000,000 FOR SCHOOL FACILITIES AND BUSES, AND THE LEVY OF TAXES SUFFICIENT TO PAY THE PRINCIPAL OF AND INTEREST IN THE BONDS. THIS IS A PROPERTY TAX INCREASE

Wow, the last sentence may bother a lot of people. I am trying to stay optimistic because if there is something worth paying higher taxes for, it's for children's education. The problem lies in the fact that right now, there is a lot of uncertainty.

Lubbock Is Looking At Uncertain Times

So what's that uncertainty about? Let's start with the fact that so much craziness is going on with the economy right now. We have tariffs, prices, and the stock market making unheard-of wild swings right now, and no one seems to know where things are going to land. In addition, Texas just approved the very confidential voucher system, so what are we paying for? To put it plainly, we don't know to what extent Texas is going to invest in our schools, so why should we?

Lubbock May Have Questions

I will make one other note, mostly out of ignorance, then again, it's up to the people who want this to pass to educate us.  The sentence "sufficient to pay the principal and interest in the bonds".  I feel like a firmer number should be given instead of "give us what we need". A lot of people may think this is a "give 'em an inch and they'll take a mile" type situation.

More On Early Voting In Lubbock

You have until next Tuesday if you wish to vote on this issue. I would imagine voter turnout will probably be very low for this issue, and it'll come down to whichever side does a better job of getting out the vote. I wish our schools, teachers, students, and parents well, but through no fault of their own, this may be a very poorly timed attempt at more school funding.
