Here Are The 7 Worst Things About Attending Texas Tech In Lubbock, Texas
Hey, this isn't all bad, or is it?
Welcome!
Welcome to town students and others! I realize this may come off as a little negative, but the fact is, many of the items mentioned are positive. After all, it's easy to focus on your studies when there's nothing else to do. So here's "The Five Worst Things About Attending Texas Tech In Lubbock":
#1. It's Far From Home
Unless you're from one of the smaller surrounding towns, chances are incredibly high that a student's home town, home state, or even home country are far, far away. Even Dallas is 5-6 hours and Austin is about 7. Distances like that tend to prevent quick trips home for a hug from mom (and some clean laundry).
#2. The Weather
The weather in Lubbock is a little extreme. If you haven't seen a duststorm, dustnado, or an authentic haboob, then get ready. We also have blazing hot temperatures and even a few days of frigid cold!
#3. Limited Entertainment Options
The nightlife here is not good, especially if you don't enjoy what the locals call "Red Dirt Country". Even then, you'd be hard-pressed to find something entertaining on anything other than a Friday or Saturday night. Beyond the very limited bar/club scene there is even less to occupy your free time (unless you like Tech sports).
#4. Conservative Environment
Forget the politics, we're talking about people being a bit "socially conservative". If you come from a diverse and accepting environment, or you yourself are a little different, you may find Lubbock a few steps behind in it's collective thinking.
#5. Public Transportation
If you don't have a car, then you'll find getting around town a little tough and/or a little expensive. Opportunities to take public transportation are few and far between. Also, the city is spread out so walking/scootering is almost always not an option.
#6. Wind & Allergies
We've already mentioned the terrible winds we get here, but let's not forget what's IN that mind. Pollens, dirt, and more are delivered directly to your face and can aggravate allergies. I've known people with no breathing problems that have breathing problems in Lubbock.
#7. Housing Availability
Off campus housing is limited and what's out there can be very expensive. The areas that were available for students to use as group homes have been wiped out and replaced with apartments that can cost a pretty penny (and are less fun).
Coda
Again, when you look at the list it's easy to say, "Well, that's not so bad...". That's how we feel about it. Like any place that new, it's an adjustment. We hope that adjustment is smooth and effortless for you. One more item, I will have the "7 Best Reasons" tomorrow.
