Can You Tame the Beast? Dive into Texas’s Mystical Werewolf Tales
I always thought of all of the supernatural creatures a werewolf was the scariest, but what if they were real?
Werewolves
We all know the werewolf legends. We know they are men who become all or part wolves during the light of the full moon, that they have ravenous appetites and are capable of tearing you apart, and that it takes a silver bullet to stop them. These are the werewolves of literary creation, today we're here to deal with a humanoid wolf that was reported sighted in Texas.
The Beast Of Bear Creek
So was the animal in question a wendigo, a Chupacabra or a werewolf? To find out we have to go back to the start which is a picture. The only "evidence" of this animal is a large carving made into a limestone cliff in the late 1800's. The face is said to have the features of a wolf. Some have said the picture may have been inspired by tales of a medicine man who could turn himself into a wolf. The picture itself was made by a traveling stone-cutter who could have left an interpretation of something he saw, or just he just had a vivid imagination.
Stories Snowball
Of course you can't have a good myth without it growing. These things tend to snowball and nearby residents claim to have heard "weird screams and howls", even though many just attributed these kind of things to animals native to the area. Supposedly the carving still exists but it is on private land and it doesn't appear that any photographs of it have been released. In fairness, some claim "the face" is just a (badly?) drawn bear to denote the name of the area, "Bear Creek".
