TC Trustees Meeting Notes Include Proposed Plumbing Program
Texarkana College’s Board of Trustees celebrated notable achievements at their meeting Monday, with a strong focus on advancing workforce education through a new plumbing program and recognizing Trustee George Moore for his recent award.
The board recognized Mr. George Moore, a proud alumnus of East Texas Baptist University (ETBU) and Texarkana College Board officer, for receiving the distinguished J. Wesley Smith Achievement Award from ETBU. This award, presented during an October 18 ceremony, honors ETBU alumni who demonstrate exceptional contributions in their professional and personal lives. “Going to East Texas Baptist College was a pivotal moment in my life,” Moore said, expressing deep appreciation for the honor. Texarkana College President Dr. Jason Smith praised Moore's achievements, emphasizing the college’s pride in his continued service and commitment to their mission.

The trustees also discussed an exciting development aimed at expanding vocational training options. Dr. Dixon Boyles, Vice President of Instruction, along with Brandon Washington, Vice President of Campus Operations and Dean of Workforce Training, presented a proposal to introduce an Associate of Applied Science in Plumbing. Texarkana College will soon seek approval from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to establish this new degree.
“The new plumbing program is driven by strong feedback from local employers and workforce leaders,” Boyles explained. “With academic council and curriculum committee support, we’re moving forward with this program to prepare our students for the growing demand in the skilled trades.”
Slated to launch on August 1, 2025, the program will provide a structured pathway for students seeking careers in plumbing, complementing TC’s existing trade programs in HVAC, electrical, and construction technology. Boyles noted that financial requirements are expected to be manageable, primarily requiring a dedicated faculty member, while equipment and facility upgrades should remain minimal.
The addition of the plumbing program underscores Texarkana College’s commitment to addressing workforce needs and expanding educational opportunities in critical fields that benefit the community.
