Former Texas Tech standout Sally Kipyego advanced to the finals of the women’s 5,000 meter run and former Tech All-American Michael Mathieu moved into the semifinals of the men’s 200-meter dash Tuesday at the Olympics.

Kipyego finished third in her heat while Mathieu also finished third.

Kipyego crossed the line with a time of 15:01.87 to secure her spot in Friday's final scheduled for 2:05 p.m. (CT). She will be now be seeking her second medal of the 2012 Olympic Games after earning silver in the 10,000-meter run last week.

Kipyego was a 16-time national champion in college, winning seven individual NJCAA titles for South Plains and a record-tying nine NCAA titles for Tech.

Mathieu finished the 200-meter dash with a time of 20.62 and will compete in the semifinals scheduled for Wednesday at 2:10 p.m.

Mathieu was a three-time All-American during his Red Raider career which spanned from 2005-06.

Fellow former Red Raider Shane Brathwaite competed Tuesday morning as well, but fell short in the men’s 110-meter hurdles after missing on the opening hurdle and not completing the race.

While at Texas Tech Brathwaite earned first team All-American honors at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Championships where he finished seventh overall in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 13.93.
