The Texas Tech football staff was completed before national signing day early in February. Then, last week coach Bouknight left the program (Oregon) and Joel Filani was brought into the fold. The Filani hiring would complete the staff for the second time. Then, on Thursday afternoon, February 22nd, 2019 the Texas Tech special teams coach would be hired away from the staff.

The special team's coach that left, Joe Lorig, went to Penn State.

So, not only are "premier" programs stealing away your coaches in late February, Texas Tech is now having to complete their staff for the third time in the Matt Wells Era before Spring football even starts.

The good news, in my opinion, is that Texas Tech upgraded their wide receiver coach by getting Joel Filani, and Matt Wells might have done it again by getting Mark Tommerdahl as his special teams' coach.

This was a name that was being mentioned before the Lorig hire as the candidate to get the special teams job. Maybe it's fate that Lorig goes to Penn State so Tommerdahl can get in his rightful spot.

Coach Matt Wells has hired Tommerdahl before, he spent the 2017 season with Utah State, before moving on to Purdue where he spent 2018.

Tommerdahl has a wealth of experience all over the country, including stops with TCU (1998-00), Alabama (2001-02), Texas A&M (2003-07) and California (2013-16) among others.

In Tommerdahl's lone season with Matt Wells at Utah State the Aggies led the conference with four blocked punts. They were also a top-25 team nationally for kick return defense.

His resume is deep and wide with high points in every stop of his coaching career. If you want a detailed recap you can check out the press release from Texas Tech.

Beyond his special teams duties, Tommerdahl will also be the Associate Head Coach and assistant offensive line coach.

Just a fantastic hire from Matt Wells.
