Kliff Kingsbury Talks About Being Hired at Texas Tech

Wednesday evening, new Texas Tech Football head coach Kliff Kingsbury and athletic director Kirby Hocutt addressed the media at Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport.  Hocutt and Kingsbury arrived on a charter jet after meeting with Chancellor Kent Hance earlier in Austin.

Kingsbury is the 15^th head football coach in Texas Tech school history.  According to Texas Tech research, at age 33, Kingsbury is the youngest head coach in a BCS conference and the second youngest in the FBS behind Toledo’s Matt Campbell.

Kingsbury said, "This is where I want to be. It's where I wanted to be, and to be back in Lubbock, at Texas Tech, means the world to me."

Kingsbury was asked if he's excited about working with quarterback Michael Brewer next year, "No doubt. No doubt," Kingsbury responded. "He was a heck of a player in high school and a winner. I just got through coaching one of those up (Texas A&M QB Johnny Manziel) that was pretty decent. Hopefully we'll get him going."

Kingsbury plans on having a staff young assistant coaches. As far the question of who will be on staff, that should be decided over the next few weeks.

Kingsbury was also asked about the fractured fanbase and is he the one to reunite the fans? "I hope so. Red Raiders are Red Raiders and we should all be pulling in the same direction. And that's what I want. I know it's time to do that again. We're a proud group and it's time to get (the program) back on track," Kingsbury said.

Hocutt was all-smiles when talking about his new football coach, "Kliff has had a tremendous career. He's had immediate success as a college football coach. His ties to Texas Tech were important to us. He's been on the radar for the past number of years. He's worked with a great head coach in Kevin Sumlin (at Houston and Texas A&M) I had a chance to work with at Oklahoma."

As a Texas Tech quarterback, Kingsbury was awarded the Sammy Baugh Trophy after the 2002 season and he passed for over 12,000 yards in his career.

Kingsbury will address his Texas A&M team on Thursday and then be in Lubbock on Friday for his formal introduction to fans and press conference with the media.
