Izod IndyCar officially scheduled a race to be set in Houston in the fall of 2013 to expand the reach of the racing circuit in the United States. The Shell and Pennzoil Grand Prix of Houston will take place October 4-6 in the Bayou City for their first race there nearly six years.

The race will take place on a temporary street course in the parking lots and streets around Reliant Stadium, home of the NFL's Houston Texans. Champ Car racing held races there in 2006 and 2007 on a similar course by the stadium, but a scheduled race in 2008 was cancelled when Champ Car and IndyCar merged their racing circuits together that same year.

Roger Penske of Penske Racing and three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves of Shell Racing joined officials from Harris County and Shell for the announcement. Penske says Houston is a major market that is ideal for IndyCar's expansion plans in the United States.
