The competition for Lubbock's burger dollars just got more intense.

One year after announcing their 3rd Lubbock location, the doors are finally open at Five Guys Burgers and Fries on 114th Street in South Lubbock.

The location is across from H-E-B and in the same complex as Jimmy's Egg and Costa Vida at the corner of 114th and Quaker. A company representative said the eatery has been open for just about three weeks now.

It's not lost on this author at just how much commerce has taken over the once sleepy intersection. With both H-E-B and Walmart on separate corners, along with quick dining options such as Chick-fil-A, Braum's, Panda Express, Wing Stop and more still to come, the explosion of business in the area is going to be appreciated by the many residents of the area who have made the migration to South Lubbock in the hastily built subdivisions that surround the area.

Five Guys has been in Lubbock for just over 10 years, with locations open already on 19th Street at Quaker and in the Canyon West Shopping Center.

The biggest question is why it's taken so long to get this 3rd location open.

For months, I drove by and didn't see any real progress. Then suddenly, once H-E-B opened last fall and the strip mall next to it became populated, it appears they stepped on the gas to get it completed quickly. Otherwise, there was a chance they'd be overshadowed by the rest of the new-ish dining options in the area.

Besides, it isn't like we don't have a boatload of burger options in the Hub City already. Heck, there's even a new Hibachi Express going in the same strip mall as Wing Stop.

Although their "Coming Soon" sign leaves a little to be desired, with all the duct tape holding it up.

It's time to grab a burger.
